Bot eggs are tiny and yellow and most commonly found in the legs and on the body, particularly in late summer. Because the eggs cause itching, the horse will lick them and ingest the eggs. Egg larvae in your horse’s stomach can rob him of essential nutrients and can cause stomach ulcers in extreme cases.
A bot knife will help remove the eggs before they are ingested. The knife has a serrated edge and is specifically shaped to get into those hard to reach places on your horse’s legs. Use the knife to scrape gently down your horse’s legs and body, working in the direction of the hair.
